Akura Book Donation Program 2016 – Morawewa
Our efforts began on 6th September 2016. A mere month later, we reached a milestone; we were able to donate library books and stationary to the students of Sinhala schools in Morawewa North and Morawewa South, in Gomarankadawala education zone. Our sincere thanks and gratitude goes to VVibes and LFES who made Akura, joined its efforts to donate books to students in four schools. We also thank the friends of Akura who have helped us immensely to make this effort a success.
Although our initial plan was to have the book donation program inline with the World Children’s Day, unavoidable circumstances delayed us till 25th October. However, feedback we received from teachers, parents and students show evidence that our effort was a huge success. The lecture delivered by Attorney Shashi Gunasinghe to the students, parents and the teachers sharing the experiences of her journey from school education to where she is today, was a great value addition to the book donation program.
This effort cost us 216,339.25 LKR and the cost incurred was for the stationary for students for the year 2017 (including the workbooks), library books (based on the list of books provided to us) for the two schools and we were able to provide each student with a packet of Samaposha as well. Students were given an environmentally friendly book bag, thus encouraging them not to dump polythene to the environment. Miss. Deepani Jayantha donated posters depicting the negative effects of dumping polythene to the environment.
